The work
Turning a piping drawing into a bill of materials requires more than recognising symbols. Production-preparation staff interpret bends, fittings, lengths and manufacturing conventions, then connect them to cost-estimating and production systems.
My contribution
I examined the work-preparation workflow with practitioners and developed a verification approach for drawing interpretation. The research asks which information can be extracted, how the resulting bill of materials can be checked and where it would fit in the existing CAD and ERP workflow.
Present status
The workflow investigation and verification design inform an ongoing feasibility study. Evaluation on representative company data remains necessary. No automated production workflow or measured labour saving is claimed.
